Abstract

The Book of Malachi is the final book in the Old Testament and the conclusion of the Minor Prophets, and is therefore often considered the final prophetic voice before the New Testament. Malachi 3:10 is a key text in the discussion of tithing in the Old Testament. This verse emerged in the context of the post-exilic spiritual crisis, when the Israelites neglected their covenant obligations, particularly regarding offerings and tithes. This study aims to analyze Malachi 3:10 through historical, grammatical, and theological approaches to understand the text's original meaning and its implications for understanding tithing in the contemporary era. The results of the grammatical analysis of key terms such as ma‘ăśēr (tithe) and the phrase “opening the windows of heaven” indicate that this text emphasizes a covenant relationship between God and His people, rather than a transactional reciprocal mechanism. Theologically, Malachi 3:10 highlights the dimensions of obedience, dependence on God's care, and the restoration of the covenant relationship. In the context of the modern church, this verse is understood not as a legalistic obligation, but as a spiritual principle that encourages loyalty, integrity, and support for the church's ministry and God's mission. This study concludes that the relevance of Malachi 3:10 lies in shaping the hearts of the people, not in the demand for a specific number, so that tithing remains a meaningful practice when understood within the framework of love, gratitude, and participation in the work of God's Kingdom.
